This itinerary offers a perfect contrast between two distinct ecosystems. Tsavo East is known for its vast, semi-arid plains and “red” elephants, while Amboseli is world-famous for its massive elephant herds and being the best place in Africa to view Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak on the continent.
Day 1: The drive from Watamu/Malindi to Tsavo East is about 2–2.5 hours.
Day 2: The transit from Tsavo East to Amboseli takes approximately 3.5–4 hours, passing through scenic landscapes and local villages.
Day 3: The return journey from Amboseli back to the coast is the longest stretch (approx. 6–7 hours), often including a lunch stop along the way.
You have a very high chance of seeing four of the “Big Five”: Elephants, Lions, Buffalo, and Leopards. While Rhinos are present in the greater Tsavo ecosystem, they are elusive in the open plains of Tsavo East and Amboseli. These parks are particularly famous for having some of the largest tuskers in Africa.
In Tsavo East, lodges are often built around waterholes where animals come to drink.
In Amboseli, lodges are strategically positioned to offer views of Mount Kilimanjaro and the Amboseli swamps.
The most productive game drives occur at dawn (6:30 AM) and dusk (4:00 PM). Animals are most active during these cooler hours. In Amboseli, the clouds around Mount Kilimanjaro often clear in the early morning and late evening, providing the best photo opportunities.
